JOHN A. MURRELL, DDS, mBA, FACP

Meet Dr. Murrell

A native of Los Angeles, Dr. John Murrell received his DDS degree in 1980 from the University of Southern California, after which he completed a one-year general practice and surgical residency at the Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital in 1981.  Following this training, he then completed his two-year Prosthodontic specialty residency in 1983 at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine. Research areas there focused on new dental ceramics.  After additional completion of a two-year Masters Degree in 1985 at the University of Southern California, Dr. Murrell has been engaged in full-time private prosthodontic practice; first in Los Angeles until 1995, and since then in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the practice that he started adjacent to Rex Hospital.

In 1996, Dr. Murrell achieved his Board-certified specialty status from the American Board of Prosthodontics. He has taught prosthodontics and dental practice business principles at both the pre-doctoral and post-graduate levels at the University of Southern California and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill dental schools. Since 1994, he has volunteered substantial teaching time at UNC Chapel Hill Dental School as an adjunct clinical professor with the Graduate Prosthodontics Department. He is a past president of the Raleigh Wake County Dental Society, and served for over 10 years as president of the North Carolina section of the American College of Prosthodontists. Through the years he has been a member of various dental study clubs, and is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of Osseointegration.  As a member of the American College of Prosthodontists since 1983, Dr. Murrell has served on numerous committees and task force groups.  He also served for 3 years on the Board of Directors as Director of the Continuing Professional Education Division, and has contributed to portions of the ACP Private Practice Manual.

Dr. Murrell maintains his long-standing commitment to excellence in dental practice and continuing dental education, has given numerous presentations to various dental groups, and has volunteered additional time as president of several homeowner’s associations. An Eagle Scout and Lifetime member of the National Eagle Scout Association, Dr. Murrell volunteers as a Troop Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America, serves as a member of the Impeesa District Eagle Scout Board of Review, and was the recipient of the District Award of Merit for long-standing significant service to Scouting locally. Dr. Murrell and his wife Sheila have twin sons, both of whom are also Eagle Scouts, and Dr. Murrell enjoys snow skiing, backpacking, hiking, and reading about historical events and people.

Dr. Murrell is honored to have been chosen again by his peers as one of “topDENTISTS” for the 2018 Raleigh/Cary/Western Wake area! This is the 3rd year in a row that he has been chosen.
